MedReview C.E.O., Joe Stamm and Executive Vice President Helen Mutchler had the honor of being special guests of New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver at the State of the State address by Governor Andrew Cuomo on January 8, 2014. Despite the frigid weather outside, they received a warm reception from many prominent political figures who also made the trip to Albany to attend the event.
In his speech, the Governor highlighted his efforts to continue New York’s successful job growth strategy through property tax relief, business tax cuts, and innovative job creation initiatives; Transform New York’s schools to provide the highest quality education for all New York children; create more progressive, safer, cleaner and fairer communities; and reimagine New York State in the wake of recent disastrous storms by improving disaster response capabilities and hardening the infrastructure to protect against future severe weather.
Mr. Stamm and Ms. Mutchler took advantage of the opportunity to meet with many of the key players in New York on health care related issues. They were able to speak with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Deputy Speaker Rhoda Jacobs, Assemblymen Michael Simanowitz, David Weprin and Steve Cymbowitz, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, State Senator Kevin Parker and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.
Although these meetings were brief, it provided Mr. Stamm the opening to reopen previous discussions on health care quality and cost containment in New York and to schedule follow up meetings. They all acknowledged that with the Governor’s plans to provide tax relief while improving services, the cost of health care services will become a critical issue and it will be a priority to ensure affordable high quality care to all New Yorkers and were interested in new and innovative ways to make that happen.
