Dr. Michael McGarvey returned to the NYCHSRO/MedReview Board of Directors in 2005, and he now serves as Vice Chairman of the Board. He had previously served on the Board from 1981 through 1988. Dr. McGarvey currently chairs the board of directors of The Institute for Community Living, Inc. (ICL) a New York City-based mental health and human services organization. He has previously served on the boards of the New York Academy of Medicine, the Greater New York Hospital Association, the New York Business Group on Health, the New York State Society of Internal Medicine, and the American Medical Review Research Center. He is a recipient of the New York Academy of Medicine’s Exceptional Service Plaque.
Dr. McGarvey is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Medicine and Reed College. He has served on the faculties of New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and Hunter College of the City University of New York. He has served as consultant to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Buck Consultants, The United Hospital Fund of New York, The Commonwealth Fund, and the Harvard University School of Public Health.
Prior to these consultancies, Dr. McGarvey served as Chief Medical Officer of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, and previously held senior executive positions at the Alexander & Alexander Consulting Group, Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Hunter College and the New York State Office of Health Systems Management.
Dr. McGarvey has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Annals of Internal Medicine, the New York State Journal of Medicine and The Pride Institute Journal.
Since re-joining the Board, Dr. McGarvey has brought his enthusiasm and experience to its work. His extensive knowledge and experience make him a valuable asset to the organization.
